Tucson events mark 10th anniversary of 9/11
Tucson-area events marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America:
Sunday, Sept. 11
Habitat for Humanity Building Freedom Day. Annual home-build to mark 9/11. 6:15 a.m. at locations around Tucson. Call 326-1217.
10th Anniversary of 9/11 Walk & 5K Military/First Responders Fun Run sponsored by World Care. Arizona Search and Rescue canine demonstrations, fire engine parade and 9/11 remembrance ceremony. 7 a.m.-noon, Reid Park, South Country Club and East 22nd Street. $25 to register for walk, free for military run.
Firefighters, police and military memorial. Ceremony begins at 8 a.m. at Fire Central, 300 S. Fire Central Place. Following the opening ceremony, a 21-gun salute, raising of the flag and taps will be played at Tucson Police Headquarters, 220 S. Stone Ave. The ceremony will move to Reid Park band shell at East 22nd Street and South Country Club where Mayor Bob Walkup and Dr. Richard Carmona will speak, with a reading by Helen Glass and a military flyby. Free.
Spiritual Reflection on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. A multifaith services with tolling of the bell. 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 9252 E. 22nd St.
Tribute to First-Responders and Their Families. Displays and emergency vehicles, and identification fingerprinting for children. Services at 7:50, 9:15 and 10:45 a.m.; displays and activities from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Casas Church, 10801 N. Cholla Blvd. Free

Tucson Police Department SWAT Team Tower Challenge. Participants will run or walk a 17-story building with two stairwells six and half times to simulate the World Trade Center. Benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. 11 a.m., 5151 E. Broadway Blvd.
Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona 9/11 Memorial. Exhibit of mixed-media memorial art by nine artists. Reception from noon to 2 p.m., Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Rd. Exhibit runs though Sept. 26.
"Rebirth" film screening. Documentary following the lives of five people dealing with the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Noon at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway. Free.
"Remembrance and Renewal." Tucson Chamber Artists and partner with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and UA Presents for a special concert to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. Mozart's Requiem and a new oratorio by Stephen Paulus will be performed. 3 p.m., multifaith memorial service will follow. Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd. $19-64. "United." A reading of Toni Press-Coffman's play about United Flight 93. Readings on Sunday and Sept. 17. 3 p.m., Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 E. Broadway. $10.

"Americana: Remember 9/11." Tucson Pops Orchestra will perform with guest conductor George Hanson. 7 p.m., Reid Park's DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, East 22nd Street and South Country Club. Free.
Multifaith memorial service. Clergy from several faiths will speak and read. Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas is the keynote speaker. 7 p.m., St. Augustine's Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave.

Prayer ceremony to remember victims, remind students. Salpointe Catholic High School faculty, staff and students will pray for 9/11 victims, their families and for the future. 8:20 a.m., the school's track at 1545 E. Copper St.
"A Human Equation," by Peter Bonilla and "United" by Toni Press-Coffman. Plays performed by Winding Road Theater Ensemble. Friday through Sept. 26. 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays; 2 p.m. Sundays (no performance on Sept. 11). Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 E. Broadwaty. $17-$20.
Sept. 10
"Stronger than Steel" photo exhibit. A collection of photos depicting first-responders by Roni Ziemba. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., former Bluepoint restaurant at La Encantada, 2905 E. Skyline Dr. Free.
"Once in a Promised Land" book discussion. Author Laila Halaby will discuss her book about a couple who leave their native Jordan to settle in Arizona, and their lives as Muslims living in a post-9/11 United States. 3 p.m., Joel D. Valdez Main Library's lower level meeting room, 101 N. Stone Ave. Free.
Human flag. The public is asked to gather at the UA's Sancet Stadium to form a human American flag to honor the victims and the heroes of 9/11. Participants are asked to wear a solid red, white or blue shirt. 3 to 4:30 p.m., National Championship Drive at East Sixth Street. Free.
Dance for a Cause presents "United We Support."An evening of dancing, singing and live music. Proceeds benefit veteran services in Southern Arizona. 6 p.m., Vail Theatre of the Arts, 1070 E. Mary Ann Cleveland Way. $10, free for children under 5.
