Broadway reopening downtown - temporarily

Broadway will be open again Thursday morning between Church and Stone avenues downtown, as engineers halt streetcar work to redesign a new sewer line in the area.
The roadway has been closed since Aug. 6 as part of the construction of the Sun Link streetcar.
A sewer line under the street needed to be replaced, said city spokesman Michael Graham.
But, because the area "has extensive, and in some cases dated, underground infrastructure," engineers found that the design for the new line needs redoing.
According to a city press release:
As excavation began, it became apparent that some of the utilities that had been installed decades earlier were not actually placed in the locations shown on plans, or no plans existed for the utility placement. This means that the current design of the new sewer line conflicts with the existing underground utilities already in place, which include electric, gas and water lines, as well as fiber optic banks and drainage facilities. To install the new sewer line at the appropriate grade to function correctly, engineers must redesign the plans.
"When the exact location of all utilities has been identified and the required permits obtained for the new sewer design, the roadway will be closed again to construct the new sewer line," Graham said.
Broadway will remain open for about 4-6 weeks while the construction team reworks the sewer plans, he said.
The timing of the closure to perform that work will depend on any events that may be scheduled when that portion of the construction is ready to proceed, he said.
