Oro Valley woman killed when garbage truck runs red light

A 71-year-old woman was killed Monday when the car she was riding in was hit by a garbage truck that ran a red light, authorities said. Margery Jones of Oro Valley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 11:10 a.m., Oro Valley police responded to a crash at the intersection of Tangerine Road and Innovation Park Drive, near Oro Valley Hospital, an OVPD spokeswoman said.

A passenger car, northbound on Innovation Park, was hit when a garbage truck eastbound on Tangerine went through a red light, Sgt. Carmen Trevizo said.

Jones was killed in the crash. The driver of the car was taken to Banner University Medical Center. The driver of the truck was "medically evaluated on scene and was not transported," Trevizo said.

OVPD traffic investigators "processed the scene," she said.

"There were no signs of impairment and the garbage truck driver reported he thought he had the green light," Trevizo said.

Charges are pending in the incident, Trevizo said.
