Free back-to-school immunization clinic set for Saturday

If you are a parent preparing your children to head back to school over the next couple of weeks, don't forget that you can't enroll them without proof of immunization. To make that easier, Pima County will be adding Saturday hours at two Health Department offices. Back-to-school shots are free.

The South Side office, 175 W. Irvington Rd., will be open Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Green Valley office, 601 N. La Cañada Dr., will be open a week later, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m.- noon. You can walk in or avoid a wait by making an appointment.

Arizona law requires all children attending kindergarten through 12th grade in public or private schools to provide proof of immunization before they are enrolled, but allows exemptions for medical reasons or personal beliefs.

The county and state have seen the return of several childhood illnesses in recent years because of a increase in the number of exemptions, health officials said in a news release. Pima County had a whooping cough outbreak last school year and Maricopa County had a measles outbreak.

“Immunizations have proven to be the safest and absolute best way to keep kids from contracting devastating yet preventable illnesses. I urge every parent in the county to get their children immunized,” said County Health Director Dr. Francisco Garcia.
