Asarco worker killed in equipment crash at Green Valley mine

A 41-year-old Asarco employee was killed Thursday night in a crash at the open pit mine west of Sahuarita. The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner identified the man as Gabriel Benitez of Tucson.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a call shortly after 9 p.m. stating a large dump truck had run over a regular-sized pickup truck at the Asarco site off Pima Mine Road, said Lt. Eric Johnson, head of the Green Valley substation.

The male driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

A press release from Asarco on Friday called the accident "an isolated incident" and said nobody else was injured.

"Work-related injuries are felt deeply in ASARCO’s company and community, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and co-workers," according to the release. They did not release any information on the victim.

The sheriff’s department’s traffic unit continues to investigate the incident, Johnson said.
