Immigration activist Tancredo backing Pearce in recall
Tom Tancredo, a former U.S. representative from Colorado, is backing state Sen. Russell Pearce in his recall election.
The Colorado Republican is lending support to his fellow opponent of illegal immigration by forming a political committee to oppose Pearce's recall.
Along with fellow arch-conservative Angela "Bay" Buchanan, Tancredo will co-chair the Committee to Oppose Recall of Russell Pearce, according to a document filed with the Arizona Secretary of State's office. The two also co-chair the Team America Political Action Committee, which focuses on immigration and border security.
That Virginia-based PAC is the sponsor of the Pearce-supporting committee.
Pearce, the president of the state Senate, faces a Nov. 8 recall election. Supporters have moved to question the petition signatures the led to the recall, although state officials reviewed the documents before Gov. Jan Brewer called the election.
Tancredo ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008. Pearce was the legislative force behind Arizona's controversial SB 1070 law.
The Mesa Republican is the first sitting Arizona legislator to face a recall. A conservative Mesa Republican, Jerry Lewis, is expected to announce his candidacy for Pearce's seat this week.
