Teen accused of trying to smuggle heroin into U.S.

Drugs found in purse; 1,200 pounds of weed found abandoned in separate incidents

About 10 pounds of heroin was seized by Border Patrol agents Wednesday at the Interstate 19 checkpoint near Nogales and more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana was found at two locations in the west desert Thursday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A canine agent alerted its team to potential narcotics during a vehicle inspection at the checkpooint. An 18-year-old woman — a U.S. citizen — is accused of carrying seven packages of the drug in her purse and a package taped to her leg, the Border Patrol said.

She was taken to the Nogales Station for criminal prosecution. The drugs were also taken to the station.

Casa Grande Station agents surveilling suspicious activity along the border Thursday found 13 bundles of pot hidden in brush in the desert. The stash, which weighed 707 pounds, was seized and taken to the Casa Grande Station for processing.

Later that evening, agents found 22 bundles of marijuana left in a wash near Topawa. The 512 pounds of pot also was taken to the Casa Grande Station for processing.
