Two Nogales-area residents were arrested for attempting to smuggle weapons and ammunition into Mexico over the last week, including 12,000 rounds of ammunition and two AR-15 rifles, authorities said.

On June 29, a 24-year-old man from Nogales was arrested at the Dennis DeConcini port of entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers after they found two AR-15 rifles and nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition hidden beneath clothing in the back of his Volkswagen sports wagon, said Rob Daniels, a CBP spokesman.

Just five days later, CBP officers arrested a 22-year-old woman at the Nogales West Mariposa crossing when an inspection turned up 10,000 rounds of ammunition in the trunk of her Dodge sedan, Daniels said.

The agency did not identify either suspect, but said that both were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the agency seized the weapons and vehicles.

In May, CBP officers intercepted 12,000 rounds of ammunition for AK-47-patterned rifles from the backseat of a car in Nogales.
