Celebrate Independence Day with a new pet

Are you looking for a new furry companion? The Pima Animal Care Center and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona are celebrating Independence Day by reducing adoption prices on Thursday and Friday for all cats and dogs.

The PACC adoption center at 4000 N. Silverbell Rd., will open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. There will be a $13 adoption fee, no matter the age or size. This will include vaccinations, a spay/neuter surgery, and a microchip.

The PACC is looking for volunteers to help walk their dogs for one to two hours Thursday at their Independence Day Dog Walk beginning at 8 a.m. around Silverbell Lake. Those interested must RSVP to and must be at least 16 years of age. They ask volunteers to bring a picture ID in order to help keep track of their dogs and leashes, and canned dog or cat food is always appreciated, PACC spokeswoman Rhonda Bodfield said in a news release.

The Humane Society will be closed Thursday, but will reopen for their Late Night Freedom Friday adoption event at the main shelter at 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd., beginning at 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. PAWSH at La Encantada will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the PAWSH location at the Park Place Mall will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Also, their PetSmart locations at Orange Grove and River and Irvington and I-19, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All adoption fees will be waived except puppies over three months old will require a $16 license fee. All dogs and cats will have been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and will receive a free wellness visit, spokeswoman Samantha Esquivel said in a news release.

The PACC and HSSA would like to remind those to keep fireworks away from their animals as the sounds can frighten them, and to make sure their gates are secured. If anyone's animal escapes, be sure to call PACC and HSSA.
