Humane Society offers 2nd round of free distemper shots

  • HSSA

In response to an increase in dogs with distemper this month, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is offering a second round of free vaccinations at a mobile clinic Saturday.

Distemper is a deadly virus that has no cure.

"The best way to keep dogs from dying of distemper is prevention, by vaccinating them," said HSSA spokeswoman Samantha Esquivel.

The clinic will be held from 7-9:30 a.m., at 635 W. Roger Rd., just west of Oracle. They will also be offering $13 dollar rabies shots and $15 microchips. The clinic will be for dogs only.

There will be plenty of ways to stay cool at the clinic, including tents for shade and water bowels for dogs.

At the first clinic, on June 14, more than 200 dogs were given free vaccinations, Esquivel said.

The prevention of this disease is so critical, said Esquivel, that HSSA has also decided to offer free distemper vaccinations at its regular low-cost vaccination clinics through the end of July. These clinics are held 9:30-11 a.m., Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious and deadly virus that affects a dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous system, Esquivel said. The only way to prevent your dog from contracting distemper is to keep his vaccinations up-to-date. Puppies need an initial shot followed by several boosters. Adult dogs should get a DAPP shot once a year, she said.
