Giffords, Kelly have book deal, Kelly retiring
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, will tell their story in a book.
Kelly announced Tuesday that he will retire from the Navy and NASA in October.
The untitled memoir will be published by Scribner. It will be produced with Jeffrey Zaslow, a Wall Street Journal columnist who collaborated with Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger on the pilot's book "Highest Duty."
"Gabby and I are forever grateful for the heartfelt support we've received over these many months. We are looking forward to sharing our story," Kelly said in a press release from the publisher.
According to the publisher, the memoir will cover the couple’s courtship, Giffords’ rise in politics, the Jan. 8 shooting and her recovery, and final mission of the space shuttle Endeavour, which Kelly commanded.
Giffords and Kelly married in 2007.
Because of congressional rules, Giffords will not receive an advance for the book, which does not yet have a publication date.
Scribner is an imprint of Simon & Schuster Inc.
Kelly retiring
Kelly said he is retiring to help Giffords as she recovers from a Jan. 8 shot to the head.
"Gabrielle is working hard every day on her mission of recovery. I want to be by her side," he said.
After being released from a Texas rehab facility last week, she is undergoing outpatient therapy at Kelly's home south of Houston.
This weekend, the congresswoman returned to Tucson for the first time since she was moved to the Houston hospital.
