Clean Elections debates kick off with GOP gov. candidates

Debates between primary election candidates who are running under the Clean Elections system begin Tuesday, with a Republican gubernatorial debate.

The Clean Elections Commission organized the debates. Candidates who accept public money must attend a debate and abide by fundraising limits. Candidates who do not accept Clean Elections funding are encouraged to attend, the Commission says.

Debates for statewide offices will be televised by KAET Channel 8 in Phoenix. Arizona Public Media/KUAT Channel 6 do not have plans to televise the debates, a spokesman said.

Video of the debates will be posted on the Clean Elections website within 72 hours, says the Commission.

The debate between candidates pursuing the Republican nomination for governor will begin at 7 p.m.

Also upcoming this month are debates between the Republican and Democratic candidates for Attorney General. Other debates will be held in July.

Arizona's primary election is Aug. 24.
