Oro Valley bans fireworks due to dry conditions

The hot, dry conditions that have raised the risk of fire in Southern Arizona have caused Oro Valley to temporarily ban the use of fireworks in the town.

The ban takes effect Friday and will be lifted when conditions improve, said Oro Valley spokeswoman Misti Nowak.

The fireworks ordinance allows the town manager to consult with the fire marshall before instituting a ban.

"We’ve been working closely with Golder Ranch Fire Chief (Randy) Karrer to assess the situation and make the best determination for this community,” Town Manager Greg Caton said in a press release.

Town Council approved the use of consumer fireworks on July 6, 2011.
