Update: Missing elderly man with dementia found by police

An 86-year-old man with dementia, who drove off in a pickup on the Northwest Side on Saturday afternoon, was found overnight in a parking lot on the other side of Tucson, authorities said.

Preston (Pat) Howard had been last seen Saturday around 12:45 p.m., leaving the area of North Camino de la Tierra between Ina and Orange Grove roads, driving a 2011 Chevrolet pickup.

He was found by a Tucson police officer in the parking lot of a Safeway store at East Broadway and South Houghton Road around 2 a.m. Sunday. That is nearly 25 miles from the Northwest Side area Howard went missing from.

Howard, who carries a portable oxygen tank, was evaluated at the scene by the Tucson Fire Department and reunited with his family, said Deputy Cody Gress of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
