Gov. Jan Brewer has said Arizona residents live in "terror" because of illegal immigration and border crime, but a new study finds the border is “one of the safest parts of America, and it’s getting safer.”

The Associated Press reports that large border cities in California, Arizona and Texas have the lowest violent crime rates in the nation.

And Arizona’s violent crime rate is among the lowest in the U.S. and is declining more rapidly than that of the rest of the country, The New Mexico Independent reports.

An internal Customs and Border Protection study, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, shows attacks against Border Patrol agents declined in 2009.

Border Patrol agents face much less violence - 3 percent - last year, than police in U.S. cities - 11 percent, according to the study. Most Border Patrol agents were assaulted by individuals throwing rocks, while most police are attacked with guns or knives.

After the murder of rancher Rob Krentz, President Obama ordered the deployment additional security personnel to the border, including 1,200 National Guard troops.
