Man tries to smuggle $218,000 into Mexico
A 37-year-old Mexican man was detained Tuesday for trying to smuggle more than $218,000 in cash through the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
The man from Caborca, Son., who was driving into Mexico, told customs officers that he had $23 and 400 pesos in cash. The man's passenger reported no currency, CBP said.
Customs officers inspected the vehicle, which had Mexican tags, and noticed something suspicious in the rear cargo area during an X-ray of the SUV, CBP said.
Officers found two cellophane packages containing $218,130 in cash. The money was seized and the driver was turned over to ICE's Homeland Security Investigations. The passenger was released after questioning, CBP said.
