10 suspected smugglers arrested with 1,600 pounds of pot
Border Patrol uses infrared tracking
Ten suspected drug smugglers were arrested and more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana were seized Friday night near Lukeville.
Using infrared cameras, agents at the Ajo station of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected the group of alleged illegal immigrants traversing the desert with heavy backpacks, according to the agency.
The Border Patrol’s Horse Patrol Unit and agents on all-terrain vehicles responded when a helicopter spotted the group, directing the agents toward the 10.
Agents found 10 suspected smugglers and 36 bundles of marijuana, worth $845,000.
The group was transported to the Ajo station and were being held for prosecution. The bundles of marijuana were turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
