I-19 lanes closed for next 2 weeks in Green Valley; no highway construction for Memorial Day weekend

Motorists on Interstate 19 near Green Valley should expect intermittent daily lane closures over the next two weeks.

Crews will install pavement sensors on I-19 between Duval Mine Road and the Canoa Ranch Rest Area between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m, officials said.

All ramps are scheduled to remain open.

Motorists may encounter delays during peak hours, Arizona Department of Transportation officials said. Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.

Basic holiday stuff

Meanwhile, no special weekend closures for construction or maintenance work are scheduled on state-maintained highways, including Tucson and Phoenix-area freeways, from Friday afternoon to Memorial Day, ADOT said.

Over the holiday weekend, drivers should focus on safety, allow extra time - especially during peak travel periods - and be prepared to slow down and use caution in existing work zones. Here are some of ADOT's highway safety recommendations:

  • Never drive while impaired - arrange for a designated driver in advance.
  • Buckle up and obey speed limits.
  • Get some rest before traveling - fatigue is a serious safety risk.
  • Pack extra supplies, including drinking water and snack foods - in case of an unscheduled highway closure.
