Man gets 8 years for illegal re-entry of a felon

45-year-old had 27 previous convictions

A 45-year-old Mexican man was sentenced to more than eight years in prison for illegal re-entry of a felon, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

Benjamin Lopez Patino was arrested Sept. 24 by Border Patrol agents on the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation. He pleaded guilty to the charge on March 13 and was sentenced to 100 months in prison on Wednesday, said Bill Solomon, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Lopez has a lengthy criminal history with 27 previous conviction for crimes including felony child abuse, assault, assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, burglary, vehicle theft and three DUI convictions, Solomon said.

Following his sentence, Lopez will be formally removed from the United States and banned for life from all legalization processes.
