A slipshod attempt to smuggle 12,000 rounds of rifle ammunition into Mexico resulted in the arrest of a Southern California man Tuesday by Nogales-area Customs and Border Protection officers, authorities said.

CBP officers arrested the man for attempting to smuggle the ammunition into Mexico after spotting several boxes of 7.62mm rounds, designed for AK-47-patterned rifles, in the passenger footwell and between the front and rear seats of his Hyundai sedan.

Officers inspected the vehicle and found more boxes of rifle rounds in the trunk. Each box contained 1,000 rounds.

Identified only as a 21-year-old man from Long Beach, California, the driver was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, said CBP spokesman Rob Daniels.

CBP officers seized the Hyundai and the ammunition.
