Motorcyclist dead after South Side crash

A man riding a motorcycle was hit by an SUV turning left at the intersection of South Campbell Avenue and East Benson Highway on Thursday afternoon. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

Oswaldo Lopez, 45, was taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after the crash, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman said.

"Sadly, shortly after arrival, the rider succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased," said Sgt. Kimberly Bay.

Lopez, who was wearing his helmet, had been riding a black 2006 Suzuki motorcycle was northbound on Campbell in the median lane, Bay said.

Just before 1 p.m., he was approaching Benson Highway on a green light, when a silver 2001 Toyota SUV driving southbound made a left turn onto Benson, to go east, and hit Lopez, Bay said.

"Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this collision," Bay said. " As the investigation is ongoing, no citation or arrest has been made."
