A truck driver at a Nogales border crossing found himself in a sticky situation Thursday, as Customs and Border Protection officers made the third-largest seizure of marijuana in Arizona history — about 14,800 pounds of the drug hidden in a semi-trailer loaded with watermelons.

The driver, a 51-year old Mexican national from Nogales, Son., was arrested at the Mariposa commercial port. A drug dog led officers to discover more than 600 packages of marijuana, worth $7.4 million, hidden with the melon shipment, said CBP spokesman Rob Daniels in a news release.

This seizure pales in comparison to more than 20,000 pounds of marijuana nabbed at the Mariposa port in November 2013, and a seizure made in February, when CBP officers discovered 17,000 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $8.5 million, in a semi-trailer carrying aircraft parts.

The truck and the drugs were seized, and the driver was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, Daniels said.
