The Humane Society of Southern Arizona's main shelter will be open from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Easter Sunday to promote pet adoption this spring.

Friday through Sunday the shelter will have selected cats and dogs available for just five dollars. On Easter, the shelter will also offer discounts on the adoption fee for any pet, said spokeswoman Sara Gromley.

"We have quite the variety with size and shape," Gromely said. The shelter is "near capacity with three to four dogs to a kennel," a HSSA press release said. Breeds ranging from Great Danes, Huskies, Dalmatians and Dachshunds are all waiting to be adopted.

"There are hundreds of dogs and cats who need homes," said HSSA spokeswoman Lyndsay Bruno.

Spring is the season for puppies and kittens, Gromely said. The shelter is hoping to find homes for 2,000 pets this season.

Because of the influx in animals who need homes, HSSA is also looking for foster families to care for pets when there is no available space in the shelter.

The five dollar specials during the Easter event will include everything a regular priced adoption does such as the spay or neuter fee, microchipping and vaccinations. Also included is a bag of pet food and a free visit to any veterinarian.

Some animals that will have discounted fees this weekend have also been through the shelter's training program, which teaches dogs basic commands such as sit, stay and come, said Gromley.

"It's really nice, you get a trained pet for a really reasonable fee," Gromely said.

The HSSA main shelter, 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd., is open Monday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
