TUSD's Jaeger hired as Amphi superintendent

Todd Jaeger, the chief lawyer for Tucson Unified School District, will move across town to take the top post in the neighboring Amphitheater Unified School District. The Amphi school board voted unanimously Thursday night to hire Jaeger, a former associate superintendent in that district in northwestern metro Tucson.

Jaeger was hired as TUSD's general counsel last year, after serving as Amphi's associate superintendent and chief lawyer since 1997. Prior to that, he had been a lawyer for TUSD for five years.

Also a finalist for the Amphi post was Abel Morado, TUSD's assistant superintendent in charge of high schools.

The president of the Amphi Governing Board, Jo Grant, said that contract negotiations are underway, and that the district expects to approve a deal with Jaeger on April 18.

Amphi has about 14,000 students. Superintendent Patrick Nelson announced in January that he would resign at the end of the school year, after running the district since 2012.

Jaeger's leaving will mean several vacant posts in the leadership of Tucson's largest school district. Earlier this week, TUSD's deputy superintendent, Karen Kopec, submitted her resignation. The district's HR head, Anna Maiden, also resigned recently.

TUSD, with nearly 50,000 students, is also in need of a superintendent after H.T. Sanchez was pushed out last month following a shift in the majority on its Governing Board.

TUSD has yet to establish a process for hiring a new permanent superintendent. Three weeks ago, a candidate set to be hired as an interim superintendent withdrew at the last minute. The Governing Board then hired Gabriel Trujillo, the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, to run the district as the search for a permanent head gets under way.
