DPS closes Public Service Center amid COVID-19 concerns

The Arizona Department of Public Safety on Monday closed its Public Service Center to the public due to concerns over COVID-19. That means Arizonans seeking help with fingerprinting, licensing, public records, permits and impounding are unable to do those things.

“We are committed to continuing to provide all services possible at this time. Most services can be completed by mail, email and telephone,” the department said in an emailed statement to Arizona Mirror when asked about the closure.

However, 30-day impounds and fingerprinting services that are required by law will still be available in person at the center by appointment only.

“People waiting for their appointment will be required to wait outside the lobby until an employee goes to escort them in,” Bart Graves, DPS spokesmen said.

The Mirror learned of the closure when attempting to pick up public records from DPS Monday morning.

“Out of concern for public safety, we have made the decision to temporarily close the lobby of the Public Services Center for in-person visits,” DPS said.

Regular business hours will remain from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the department said there are “no cases of COVID-19 within the department.”

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there are 2,456 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arizona, along with 65 deaths, as of April 6.
