Grant Road repaving to roll out this week

Roadway being recycled, topped with fresh asphalt

A recycled roadway, reusing some of the existing worn-out pavement as aggregate, should reduce wear and tear on cars — and drivers — as East Grant Road gets a Midtown facelift over the next six weeks. The much-maligned street will no longer be a boon to local alignment shops.

The $1.7 million project starts Thursday, with completion slated for May 15.

Grant will get new pavement between North Santa Rita Avenue — just east of Park Avenue — and Columbus Boulevard, city spokesman Mike Graham said.

Crews with Granite Construction will use a 150-foot-long "hot-in-place recycling train" to smooth out the road, said city engineer Fred Felix.

The equipment train removes the top 1.5-2inches of asphalt, which is discarded. The roadway is heated and another inch or two of asphalt is milled from the road, and mixed with fresh asphalt emulsion in a "rejuvenation" process, he said.

That mix is laid down on the road, and topped with 1.5 inches of new asphalt, Felix said.

The three-mile stretch will cost about $1.7 million, funded by HURF monies (gas taxes and vehicle registration fees), Graham said, and will hold up for the eight years it will take for the Grant Road widening project to go through Midtown.

While the repaving should be complete by April 23, work to raise manhole and water main covers flush with the new surface will continue through mid-May, he said.

Workers will work in alternate directions, repaving one lane at a time and keeping at least one lane of travel open in each direction, Graham said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the funding source for the repaving. HURF monies from gas taxes and vehicle registration fees are being used to fund the project, not the city’s road bond.
