Border Patrol agents at the I-19 checkpoint arrested three people for human smuggling after discovering Mexican nationals in their car's trunks during three separate incidents last week.

On March 11, agents opened the trunk of a Dodge Avenger during a secondary inspection and discovered an undocumented Mexican man in the trunk, according to a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In a similar incident on Friday, agents sent the driver of a Dodge Neon to secondary inspection and found two Mexican nationals in the car's trunk.

On Saturday, agents arrested the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze after discovering two Mexican nationals, one a juvenile, in the trunk.

While many cars have releases inside the trunk, the agency wrote that "several of the subjects removed from vehicles stated they had no knowledge of the trunk release mechanism."

Additionally, the agency stressed the danger of traveling with a person in the trunk, citing dangers due to heat, car accidents and "unforeseen circumstances."

The vehicles were seized and the drivers will be charged with alien smuggling. The unauthorized immigrants will be processed according to agency guidelines, the release said.
