Giffords, husband to appear on Mediterranean cruise
Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will be the headliners of a $5,000 Mediterranean cruise this summer.
Kelly is slated to be a "celebrity guest speaker," giving a "special lecture about the power of the human spirit," said the website of Crystal Cruises.
Giffords is scheduled to make a "special appearance," the cruise ship operator said. The former congresswoman, who resigned in January to focus on recovering from being shot in the head the previous year, "not expected to speak at the presentation, although there will be a photo opportunity with guests," Reuters reported.
"We are pleased they have chosen to do this," Mimi Weisband, Crystal Cruises' public relations vice president, told Reuters. "She is still recovering and she has to be very thoughtful about the kind of travel she does."
The 12-day cruise aboard the Crystal Serenity, which sails in late July, costs $5,400 and up, with penthouses available at $11,400. The ship will sail between Lisbon, Portugal, and Rome, Italy.
Crystal Cruises did not disclose any financial arrangements between the company and Giffords, Reuters said.
