Pinal County Sheriff's deputies seized three AK-47s and ammunition Tuesday morning following a traffic stop attempt in Stanfield, PCSO said.

A deputy on a patrol attempted to stop the driver of a sedan who commited a traffic violation at the intersection of North Anderson and West Korsten Roads, said PCSO spokesman Elias Johnson.

The driver fled the area at a high reate of speed, but within minutes abruptly stopped the vehicle at Golden Hills Drive and two men fled the car into the desert, Johnson said.

A search of the car turned up three AK-47 rifles and a "substantial amount" of ammunition, Johnson said.

Deputies, canine units and an air unit were unable to locate the car's driver and passenger, Johnson said.
