Blood drive at Oracle/Ina Safeway on Saturday

Two local religious groups are partnering with the American Red Cross and Safeway to hold a blood drive at the Ina and Oracle Road grocery store on Saturday.

The blood drive will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the La Toscana Village shopping center, 7110 N. Oracle Rd.

The drive is sponsored by Transform Tucson and Fountain Gate Ministries International. The goal for the blood drive is to attract 75 donors, said Debra Deininger, communications and marketing manager for the local Red Cross.

“A pint of blood can save more than one life,” Deininger said.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, in generally good health and weigh 110 pounds or more. Anyone donating under the age of 18 must have written parental permission and all donors are asked to have a Red Cross blood donor card or other identification with them when they arrive.

“We want to provide an opportunity for Tucson to come together in an act of charity that brings healing,” said Richard Kruszewski of Transform Tucson in a press release.

“This drive is not in honor or memory of any person or group of people,” Deininger said.

The Northwest Side Safeway was the site of the Jan. 8 mass shooting that authorities call an assassination attempt on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Six were killed and 13 others, including Giffords, were wounded in the attack.
