Gray water, rainwater harvesting workshops Saturday
Tucson Water is offering an increased gray water installation rebate and a rebate up to $2,000 for rainwater harvesting installation to those who qualify and attend two free workshops on Saturday.
The rebate for installing a gray water irrigation system was $200, but was increased to half the installation amount up to $1,000 per household, said Tucson Water spokesman Fernando Molina.
“The participation rate with the old rebate was low, so we worked with the Citizens’ Water Advisory Committee to increase it,” said Molina. “We also wanted to make it more competitive with the rainwater rebate.”
For rainwater harvesting system installations, Tucson Water offers a rebate that matches half the cost of installation up to $2,000 per system.
The gray water and rainwater harvesting rebates apply to all systems installed after Jan. 1. The first step to qualifying for a rebate is attending Saturday’s workshops. Those who attend will receive additional information on how to qualify.
At the rainwater harvesting workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, attendees will learn how to design passive and active rainwater systems in residential areas, said Molina.
The gray water workshop will be held from 1-3 p.m. and will focus on how to design, operate and maintain a gray water system at home. The system conserves water by redirecting some water from washers, bathtubs, showers and kitchen sinks to an outdoor irrigation system.
“This is a long term strategy to encourage efficient use of water in the city,” said Molina.
Both workshops will be taught by gray water and rainwater harvesting expert Lincoln Perino.
Molina says seating for both workshops is limited.
