Dateless on Valentine's weekend? Take a tour of the city's landfill
If you're down in the dumps on Valentine's weekend, the city of Tucson has plans for you.
The Environmental Services Department will offer a tour of the Los Reales Landfill and the ReCommunity recycling center next Friday morning
"Participants will get an exclusive 'behind the scenes' view and learn how (Environmental Services) manages waste diversion in Tucson," spokeswomen Cristina Polsgrove said.
Tour participants will learn how recyclables collected are sorted and marketed, see how household hazardous waste is handled at the Southeast Side facility, and learn how the landfill cells protect groundwater, she said.
"Those on the tour will also see landfill operations and learn how methane gas generated at the landfill is used as a renewable energy source to power Tucson," Polsgrove said in a news release.
The tour will begin at the Los Reales Landfill, 5300 E. Los Reales Rd. Those taking the tour will meet at the administrative office on the back patio at 8:30 a.m. The tour will be completed by noon. Those who attend the tour should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, hats and sunscreen. Drinking water will be provided.
