Sheriff shuffles commanders, cuts one bureau chief

Pima County Sheriff Mark Napier is reorganizing his department after taking office earlier this month, eliminating one bureau and a high-ranking position, and combining functions under reshuffled leaders, with one newly elevated bureau chief.

Four former bureaus of the Pima County Sheriff's Department — Operations, Investigations, Administrative and Corrections — will be divvied up between three new ones: Operations, Support and Corrections.

The new bureaus' "exact composition (is yet) to be determined," officials said.

Heading the new Operations Bureau will be Chief Karl Woolridge, who has been running the department's Administrative Bureau. Running Corrections will be Chief Byron Gwaltney, formerly the head of Operations. He replaces Corrections Chief India Davis, who abruptly resigned as Napier took office.

Running the Support Bureau will be Chief Deanna Johnson, formerly the captain of the Special Investigations Division. Losing out in the reorg is the former chief of Investigations, Jesus Lopez.

"The end result will be a significant reorganization and possibly the reduction of additional command level positions," said a PCSD spokesman.

The new chiefs will assume their positions on February 19, "at which time we also hope to have the reorganization complete," said Deputy Ryan Inglett

Prior to the restructuring, PCSD had nine divisions among the four bureaus.
