Oro Valley begins delivery of CAP water
Oro Valley began delivering CAP water to customers last week, a town news release said. The water is recharged and then pumped from recovery wells north to the town.
The Central Arizona Project pumps water from the Colorado River to the Tucson and Phoenix areas.
A once-controversial recharge system run by Tucson Water allows the CAP water to percolate into an underground aquifer for storage. It is pumped from the Avra Valley facility and delivered as needed.
Oro Valley plans to deliver approximately 1,500 acre feet of CAP water into its potable water system annually which will significantly reduce the town's reliance on groundwater, the release said.
Thirty-seven percent of the town's water deliveries will be from renewable sources, the release said.
