A 44-year-old man from Michoacan, Mexico, was sentenced to more than six years in prison for being in the country illegally, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Friday.

Jose Luis Zavala Vasquez, of Nueva Italia, was given a 77-month sentence Jan. 18 for illegal re-entry of a felon, the Border Patrol said.

Zavala was apprehended in March by Border Patrol agents from the Sonoita Station. During processing, agents found Zavala was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2003 in Florida and sentenced to a year in prison. He was removed from the United States through San Ysidro, Calif., the Border Patrol said.

Following his term in prison, Zavala will be formally removed from the United States and banned for life from all legalization processes, the Border Patrol said.
