Navy corpsman, diving medical technician and University of Arizona student Joseph Murphy has another line to add to his resumé: 2015 Navy Region Southwest Reserve sailor of the year.

The Tucson native, a hospital corpsman 1st class, received a nice surprise this holiday season when he was selected for the award.

"I put forth a lot of effort to get done what needs to get done and try to improve the command. That is what drives me. Making sure things get done the right way," said Murphy.

Hospital Corpsman Senior Chief David Danielson, who helped pick Murphy for the award, said he "represents the knowledge, skills and ability for which leadership is looking for within the reserve force."

Later this spring Murphy will face the Navy Reserve sailor of the year selection board.

"It takes a large degree of commitment," said Danielson in a statement released by the Navy.

Murphy, assigned to the Undersea Rescue Command, has trained to become a diving medical technician.
