Steve Christy, a banker and former car dealer, has been named the chair of the Arizona State Transportation Board.

Christy is currently the chair of the board of the Regional Transportation Authority, and sits on the Regional Council of the Pima Association of Governments.

He was elected chairman of ASTB at that groups' Jan. 17 meeting in Prescott, RTA/PAG spokeswoman Sheila Storm said in a news release Tuesday.

He has served on the seven-member ASTB since 2009. His one-year term as chair of the RTA Board ends Jan. 23, but Christy will remain active in both that board and the PAG, Storm said.

Although the former car dealer (he sold Steve Christy Chrysler-Jeep in 2007) was at first critical of the Sun Link streetcar project, Christy's swung around to being a supporter of it during his time on the RTA board. At a September ribbon-cutting at the streetcar's maintenance facility, he said he's changed his mind about Sun Link, having seen all the new businesses along the route.

Christy is a loan officer with VIP Mortgage and a director at the National Bank of Arizona.
