Native Americans: Preserve identity in face of pop culture

A San Carlos Apache Tribe member joined others who testified to a Senate committee that popular images of Native Americans, often offensive, need to be challenged for the tribes to preserve their culture for future generations.

I think a good start, and where the Native people should be focusing their energies, is to eliminate the term “Indian” in this context. They only reason they’re referred to as that is because Columbus was an idiot.

As to the other things…I think we may be going to far with that, nitpicking, if you will.

I offer to the Native peoples, or anyone people, really, that if they want to maintain their identity and their culture, that’s great. But, they have to focus on themselves. Stop worrying about what other people are doing, tune it out. You live the way you want to live, and make sure you teach your ways and your customs to your children. Don’t count on “pop culture” to help you maintain your identity. Wow, that’s destructive thinking!
