Grocer Haggen to close Tucson, other Southwest stores

Grocery chain Haggen will shutter its remaining store in Tucson and more than 120 others to "realign operations." The company filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, and parted ways with an executive who led the company's dramatic expansion that saw it take on 146 stores, a burst from just 18 locations a year ago.

I’ll admit…I had no idea there was a Haggen store in this town until I first read mention of it in the Sentinel some weeks ago. Granted, part of that problem is that the nearest location is several miles from my home, and I would pass at least two grocery stores on the way to driving to a Haggen location. But, I believe that speaks to horrible marketing on Haggen’s part. No TV spots (that I saw), no coupons or flyers in the newspaper, nothing. I’m not clear how a business who doesn’t market themselves expects to draw customers.
