AZ Illustrated to go 'on hiatus,' new Metro Week to debut

The flagship news program at Arizona Public Media will be off the air through the summer, and a new weekly program on local public affairs will begin June 6. "Metro Week" will be hosted by reporter Andrea Kelly. When AZ Illustrated returns, it'll be a once-a-week half-hour broadcast.

My wife and I have been Tucson residents since November 15, 1995 and members/contributors of AZPM since March 1996.  In previous locations one or both of us have been members of PBS affiliates in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento where I served as chairman of the board of KVIE6 in 1982-3.  We get our news—local, national and world—from the Star, the Weekly and a couple of national on-line dailies and from PBS.  Locally, the Friday evening Political Roundtable has been a ‘must watch’ in our household for years and we have been largely delighted with its latest incarnation under the moderation of Jim Nintzel, southern Arizona’s most ubiquitous, knowledgeable and engaging political reporter and analyst.

If you AZPM’s programming decisions are based on a younger demographic I guess our preferences can be discounted, since our average age is slightly over 81 years.  But we remain active in the community, and particularly in its political life, and we enjoy the jousts between representatives of our two historic parties and the—hopefully ephemeral—tea party.

While the current five night format of AZ Illustrated has left a good bit to be desired, I think AZPM is to be applauded for trying something of the sort.  It has apparently not worked well enough to be continued, but that should not mean that the Roundtable needs to go away.  I’d go so far as to say that Tucson needs it.

I think this is a bad decision on Jack Gibson’s part.

I’d be interested in the demographics of the AZOM ‘members.”

Betcha it’s OLDER than 50. It is in this MEMBER’s house.
