The Navajo Generating Station near Page burns locally mined coal to generate power for the Central Arizona Project, among other clients. But competition from low-priced natural gas will lead to the plant’s closure, its owners say. If the plant closes at the end of 2019, it would mean the loss of hundreds of jobs in an area where economic options are hard to come by, experts say.
