Republican bills aim to ax Clean Elections

If approved, the bills would have Arizonans decide whether to get rid of public financing for campaigns. Supporters of the bills say Clean Elections is ineffective. But opponents say the effort is an attempt to mislead voters.

Contact Rep. Petersen at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 602-926-4136 and tell him not to kill Clean Elections. Insist he work to strengthen the voter approved Act and overturn Citizens United. Arizonans passed Clean Elections to fight political corruption and cronyism, increase voter participation, and for candidates who choose to participate, focus on #VotersNotDonors. It has been weakened by lawmakers but still has been successful in all of these goals. This is why politicians like Mr. Petersen continue to attack the law. Privately funded candidates focus on donors. Mr. Petersen clearly states this in his remarks, avoiding the fact that a Clean Elections candidate must convince many more voters in her district to support their effort to receive Clean Elections funding and run for office.  Privately funded candidates solicit money from all corners of this planet, regardless of the “person” being a voter or human being (Citizens United). It must be wonderful to have so many corporations (“persons”) as close friends. Mr. Petersen is disingenuous and simply “scratching the backs” of those big money groups who take our tax dollars and then return a slice of the money back to him as campaign cash. Now they want the Clean Elections money too. Don’t expect it to go to education but rather corporate welfare as promised by Gov. Ducey with five more years of corporate tax cuts being rolled out while continuing to cut education funding (3% cut proposed in the new budget). Remember Tom Horne? Only the independent Clean Elections Commission has effectively held politicians accountable when they cheat while running for office, including removing two lawmakers for cheating to win office.
