Effective Jan. 1, workers who make less than $35,568 a year will have to be paid time and a half for any work over 40 hours a week, an increase from the old threshold of $23,660 that had not been changed in 15 years. But the increase iks far below what was proposed by the Obama administration and will protect millions fewer workers.

Before the Great Depression and the New Deal, it was called “Robber Baron Capitalism,” maximizing profits by keeping workers’ wages as low as possible, exploiting children, firing at will or whim, dumping employees maimed by unsafe conditions. Reluctantly legalized by the New Deal, unions created the American middle class, enabling workers to buy homes, go to college, take vacations, etc. While unions represented just 35% of the work force, their benefits spilled out into the larger society—8 hour day, Social Security, unemployment insurance, health and safety (which Nixon signed!), minimum wage, and overtime.
Reagan’s busting of PATCO in 1981 started the rollback, which has continued through both Dimocrat and Republikook administrations, and which tRump is bringing back to Robber Baron conditions. The rich are getting richer every day, while the working class is getting higher prices (with tRump tariffs), stagnant—and with the new overtime rule, lower—wages, and tariff-related job losses. The American middle class is in serious decline while a few more billionaires get big tax cuts. tRump and both political Establishments are no friends of working people!
