Spend Valentine's weekend under the Tucson stars

You can gaze skyward and perhaps spy a shooting star at "A Night Under the Stars" events this weekend at two local parks. Astronomy groups will offer assistance using telescopes at Canoa Ranch on Friday, and Tucson Mountain Park on Saturday.

Volunteers with the Sonora Astronomical Society will offer an introduction to the night sky and help visitors use telescopes Friday. The viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. at Canoa Ranch in Green Valley, 5375 S. I-19 Frontage Rd.

The Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association will help participants at a star-gazing event at Tucson Mountain Park, 8451 W. McCain Loop, on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The events are being coordinated by the Pima County Natural Resources, Park and Recreation Department.

Friday at Canoa Ranch, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the historic Hacienda de la Canoa headquarters around 5 p.m, before the stars come out after sunset.

"Docents will be on hand to share stories of the people who lived and worked on the ranch," the county's Valerie Samoy said in a news release.

Stargazers should bring flashlights to ease walking after dark, and can bring lawn chairs if they wish, Samoy said.

Both stargazing events will be free, family-friendly, and will be held if the weather permits.

Correction: The location of Saturday’s event has been updated, due to incorrect information having been provided earlier by Pima County.
