Kametani is first Pima men's soccer player named National Player of the Year

Pima Community College men’s soccer player Hugo Kametani received the highest honor on Thursday from the United Soccer Coaches.

Kametani, a sophomore forward, was selected the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division I National Player of the Year. Kametani is the first Pima men’s soccer player in program history to receive this honor.

Kametani scored the game-winning goal to give the Aztecs their first NJCAA Division I National Championship. He scored a program-record of 30 goals; seven were game-winners as he played and started in all 28 games.

“I’m so happy right now to receive this honor,” Kametani said. “I want to thank all of the people who have been involved with me. I think that it is proof that I have kept working and putting in effort. Although it is an individual honor, I think that this was taken by all members of the team.”

Below is a list of Kametani’s accomplishments this season:

  • First Team NJCAA All-American
  • First Team United Soccer Coaches All-American
  • First Team United Soccer Coaches All-West Region
  • NJCAA Division I National Tournament MVP

  • ACCAC/Region I Player of the Year

The Aztecs finished the season with a 26-2 overall record. They claimed the ACCAC conference championship, the Region I, Division I title and the West District crown.
