Wildcat soccer to host opening match of NCAA tournament

Friday's match marks 6th post-season appearance for Arizona

The University of Arizona’s Mulcahy Stadium will be hosting a first-round match of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. The Wildcats will play the University of Denver Pioneers, officials announced Monday.

This year’s tournament appearance — Friday at 6 p.m. — will be the sixth for the Wildcats, and their third time hosting a match.

The regular season ended with defender Morgan McGarry scoring the winning goal against Arizona State on Friday. The win, their fifth against a PAC-12 opponent, secured a record of 12-5-2 and the 29th spot on the RPI ranking, the rating used by tournament selectors.

The University of Denver, known as the Pioneers, compiled a record nearly identical to Arizona's: 13-5-2. The Wildcats last played the Pioneers in 2016, in a 3-0 win for Arizona with goals from Paige Crouch, Lexe Selman and Gabi Stoian. You’d have to go back to the Jane Hull administration for the previous meetings: a Denver win in 2001 and a Wildcat win in 1998.

The 2017 season for Denver included a loss to Colorado, a team that Arizona played to a 1-1 draw at the end of September, as well as a win over Cal State Fullerton, who Arizona also defeated. Goalkeeper Brittany Wilson, who had call ups for the U.S. national team’s youth sides, was a teammate of Arizona’s Amanda Porter at Real Colorado and Columbine High School.

In all, five PAC-12 schools made the tournament. Two were never in doubt: 2017 champion Stanford played to a 17-0-2 record and last year’s runner-up UCLA cruised to their 22nd appearance after ending the season 14-3-1. They are the number one and number two seeds. USC and Washington State will also be in the tournament this year.

Friday’s match is scheduled for Mulcahy Stadium at 6 p.m. Should Arizona win, the next match will be against the winner of Louisville and number two seed Tennessee.
