OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Arizona women’s soccer team earned its second win of the 2012 season with a 3-1 triumph over the Creighton University Bluejays (1-4-1) at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb., on Sunday.
Arizona (2-2) came out very aggressive on offense, registering 17 shots with nine on the goal. Senior forward Susana Melendez picked up her second goal of the season in the 13th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
In the 17th minute, junior forward Jazmin Ponce recorded her second goal of the season off a pass from freshman Hannah Wong. In the second half, Ponce scored another goal in the 84th minute; senior Kristin Strother picked up the assist on the play.
In the victory, the Wildcats outshot the Bluejays, 17-8, with Ponce leading the way with five and sophomore Emily Lai right behind her with three. Ponce was one of five Wildcats to play the full 90 minutes, including Sheridan Cohen, Kirstyn Magyar, Mykaylin Rosenquist, and Gabby Kaufman.
In the net, Arizona goalkeeper Kaufman saved five shots while the Creighton goalkeeper, Katie Jo Swanson, had six saves.
Arizona gears up for their first tournament of the season at the Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe. The Wildcats will play Pepperdine University on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (MST) and take on Houston University on Sunday at 11 a.m. (MST).
