The Tucson Padres hit three home runs in the fifth inning Wednesday and beat the Reno Aces, 9-5.
Anthony Rizzo hit a solo home run with one out, his 24th home run and 98th RBI, and later in the inning Pedro Feliz and Anthony Contreras hit back-to-back shots. Tucson hit five extra-base hits in the five-run inning and never looked back, holding on to end a four-game losing streak.
Tucson starter Jeremy Hefner pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs in his third straight quality start. Brad Brach entered with two on base and two outs in the eighth and pitched out of the jam. Brach only faced three hitters in the ninth to complete the save. Anthony Rizzo made an over the shoulder running catch in foul territory to end the game.
The Padres are trying to stop the second celebration at Kino Stadium this homestand. Sacramento clinched the Southern Division title Tuesday in Tucson and Reno has a magic number of five to seal the Northern Division with five games remaining in the series.
The last time the Padres hit back-to-back home runs was on June 3 in Las Vegas (Tolleson and Rizzo). Reno also hit a set of back-to-back home runs in the loss, when Andy Tracy and Cole Gillespie went deep in the fourth.
Wednesday's game started 34 minutes late because of a weather delay.
Tim Hagerty is the play-by-play announcer for the Tucson Padres.
