Aztec Rodriguez wins national title in long jump

The Pima Community College track & field teams competed in the NJCAA National Championships at Mesa Community College on Thursday and Friday and came away with a national champion.

Sophomore jumper Brianna Rodriguez (Cienega HS) closed out her Pima career as the top long jumper in the nation. She won the event with a jump of 18' 11¾" late Friday night — earning 10 points for the women’s team.

Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) finished eighth and qualified for the final race in the 1,500 meters for the prelims with a time of 4:56.28.

Alfonso Mejia (Douglas HS) finished first in his heat as part of the 400-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 53.37 and qualified for the final race this afternoon.

In other women’s events, Ashley Dawson (Safford HS) took 12th in the hammer throw (141-4), Vanessa Fox (Snowflake HS) was 10th in the long jump (17-10¼), Maggie Prillaman (Ironwood Ridge HS) took 16th in the long jump (17-3¼), Raelene Yocupicio (Rio Rico HS) finished 18th in the 800 meters (2:25.14) and she, along with Shanice Alchesay (Alchesay HS), Tenishia Reynolds (Sabino HS) and Col’Bi Nez (Holbrook HS) were 10th in the 4x800 relay (10:00.03).    

In other men’s events, Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) took 10th in the long jump (23-6¼), Khailil Hakim (Kellis HS) was 18th in the long jump (21-7¼), Kevin Snead was 14th in the 100 meter dash (10.68), Cruz Rodriguez (Empire HS) was 27th in the 800 meter (1:58.51), Anfernee Alexander (Santa Cruz Valley Union) took 16th in the shot put (46-9½) and the relay team of Mejia, David Stiles (Yuma HS), Hakim and Snead took 17th in the 4x100 (41.95).

The final day of the NJCAA National Championships will be Saturday afternoon at Mesa Community College. Events begin at 3 p.m.
