Dick Tomey memorial service set for May 31

A public memorial service for former University of Arizona football coach Dick Tomey will be held Friday, May 31, at McKale Center. Tomey, Arizona's coach from 1987-2000, died last week at age 80.

The architect of the mid-'90s "Desert Swarm" defense at Arizona, Tomey was the PAC-10 Coach of the Year in 1992, and led teams that included five future first-round NFL draft picks, 20 All Americans and more than 40 first-team conference players.

The winningest football coach in Wildcat history (95 victories) died May 10 of lung cancer.

The memorial for Tomey will begin at 9 a.m. in the basketball arena on the UA campus, organizers said. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Dick Tomey Legacy Fund.

Tomey was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Before coaching at UA, he led the University of Hawaii team for 10 years. After losing his UA post, he coached San Jose State University from 2005-2009. Tomey compiled a 183-145-7 overall record; 95-64-4 at Arizona. In 2011, he was the special teams coach at Hawaii.
